Poster Analysis 2

This film is Drag Me To Hell and it was released in 2009.
This poster is the main theatrical poster as at the bottom of the poster it contains information about the production company, stars and the distributors.

The main character is being played by Alison Lohman. The title graphics are in white which stands out sharply against the background. The font used is very modern and is all in capitals which helps to capture the audience’s eye. The stars names have been placed at the bottom of the page as it means that all the attention is placed on the main image and not detracted.

The main image is of a young woman who appears to be being dragged down into hell, I think this because of the flames around her and the writing which gives a hint to what happens in the plot and on the poster. I also get this impression because of the hands that are clutching her shoulders and necklace; they do not appear to be human as they are brown and withered. This is further suggested by the claws which look like they are about to be sunk into the woman’s shoulders to stop her from getting away.

This image has been used to show the audience that this film is part of the horror genre. It has also been used to show the audience who the main character. Also, it shows the audience the plot although it does not tell them how or why it is happening. This image shows us that this woman is the main character in this film.

She appears to be in a neighbourhood which suggests that this film is set in an urban setting. The fact that she is in a neighbourhood also suggests that she is standing outside her house as the background is a night scene The most important colours in this poster are the red and orange flames as they are confirming to the audience that this woman is indeed going to hell as flames have been used to represent hell throughout history.

The colours being used in this poster are; grey, white, black and red. All of these colours are quite dramatic especially the black and red which have always been used to represent evil.

These colours are very strong and prove to the audience that this film is definitely a horror. I think that the target audience for this film would probably be 15 and up as it looks like there could be some very graphic scenes in this film which would not be suitable for someone below that age. When it comes to gender I think that this film will be suitable for both males and females as the main character is a female and she is quite attractive (which would appeal to the males).

When I look at the woman she is quite well dressed in sober clothing which suggests that she has a good job and normally a good life I also get the impression that she was just a normal woman before she was dragged into hell.

As she is directly in the middle of the poster it is certain that all the attention should be focused on her and not the writing.

As she is being pulled it is obvious that she is petrified and in pain because of the way her face has been contorted and the fact that her head has been thrown back so she can scream.

When it comes to perspective I would say that the image of the female has been made bigger as a woman’s head would not normally reach the top of a building and cover it with their head. However this has obviously been done using DTP as the picture is very clear and the flames would have been produced on the computer. That definitely proves that it is a modern film as in the past, the people who designed posters would not have had the technology available to produce special effects as we do now.

The tag line is situated directly below the woman’s chest which almost suggests that it is going down to hell with the character. We do get some information at the bottom of the poster talking about who the distributors and producers are and it also has the names of the actors. There is a website address which offers further information about the film.

I think that the unique selling point of this play is probably the settings as normally films about hell and demons are situated within families namely; The Exorcist, The Possession.
